Man Utd boss Van Gaal boosted by win at Anfield

Whether it’s to bemoan their luckless performance or to slate Louis van Gaal’s side for their perceived jamminess, a large section of the support are going into total meltdown on Twitter.

Forlan memorably scored twice in a 2-1 win against Liverpool at Anfield in December 2002. And the United boss believes the Red Devils will need to be the same as last season, with controlled aggression the key to victory.

“I am a happy coach”, said Van Gaal, who has won all four games against Liverpool since joining United in 2014.

The Spanish giants had been expected to launch another bid for the player in the summer but have now been banned by Federation Internationale de Football Association from buying new players until the middle of 2017.

On the victory: “Of course when you beat Liverpool you know in advance what it means to the fans, but also in the table because our competitors also lost points”. Previous year for example Steven Gerrard came on and he was sent off within 30 seconds – that is not happening so much.

“We are not a high pressing game, we press where the ball is”.

“Both teams approached the game in the right manner and created chances”, Hughes said. “We have to show it at that time in that 90 minutes, or 95 minutes, with the resistance of Liverpool”.

United stayed two points behind fourth-place Tottenham in the race for Champions League qualification, and moved up a place to fifth.

“Liverpool is a different team to Newcastle”. And Van Gaal will look to do so against Jurgen Klopp, a manager he is yet to face in England.

The game was a reflection of the two clubs’ current fortunes; both trying to rediscover their identities under foreign managers and generally struggling for quality, especially in the final third.

However Van Gaal has expressed his belief the former Southampton left-back could recover sooner than initially expected. “I think he is a fantastic Manchester United striker for the media but he was also that in the first half of the season”. The Monday night game sees Swansea host Watford.

“I think that the key of the game is which team shall keep the ball under the pressure of the opponent”, he said. What I am bothered about are trophies and that’s why Stoke City on January 26 is much bigger for Klopp and Liverpool than a visit from Manchester United’.
