Oscars 2016: Outrage as Black Actors Absent From Nomination Lineup

The Revenant is leading the race for the 2016 Oscars with 12 nominations, with Mad Max: Fury Road scoring 10. Both of them well ahead of other contenders. As well as receiving his first nomination for best director, he is also a nominee for best picture as one of the producers of Fury Road.

The Revenant is tough viewing too, but it’ll be hard for the Academy to snub Leo again. Damon was joined by Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant”), Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”) and Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl”) in that coveted category.

Tom Hardy says he has Leonardo DiCaprio to thank for convincing him to take his Oscar-nominated role in The Revenant, as the stars took to the red carpet for the United Kingdom premiere in Leicester Square. Expectedly, there are still a lot of surprises and disappointments with the Academy’s decisions, which have become a yearly debate for the fans.

However, the only gong it was revealed to be in line for was Original Screenplay.

“Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara’s performances were simply incredible, and it’s a shame their film got shut out of the Best Picture category”.

Many Oscars watchers believe the cast of N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton should have been recognised by voters, while others feel Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan should have picked up Best Actor nods for their roles in Concussion and Creed, respectively.

Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight has three nominations (best supporting actress for Jennifer Jason Leigh, best original score for Ennio Morricone; best cinematography for Robert Richardson) but was overlooked for best picture and best director.

“The Martian” has bagged seven nominations while “Carol” and “Spotlight” got six each. Winning and being nominated are two far different battles, and “Mad Max’s” awards fate will be one storyline to watch heading into awards night. The screenplay, adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s novel “The Price of Salt”, garnered a best adapted screenplay nomination.

Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actor are shown in this combination of file photos (L to R) Mark Rylance, Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Sylvester Stallone and Mark Ruffalo.

Brazilian filmmaker and screenwriter Ale Abreu’s “Boy and the World” has been nominated for the first time for Best Animated Feature Film.

Berloff added that there was a key positive note for women in the nominations list: four women nominated for their screenplays this year.

Another record breaker this year is Steven Spielberg, who produced and directed “Bridge of Spies”.

Finally, we have the Best Picture category that every movie strives to win.

Those voicing disappointment included the academy’s president herself, Cheryl Boone Isaacs. Or just the most recent Academy Award whiteout? But, hey, at least they snagged a amusing black dude (Chris Rock) to host again, right?
