George Miller Denies Being Done With ‘Mad Max’

That was a completely garbled interview.

Australian blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road has raked in 10 Oscar nominations for 2016, the most ever for an Australian film.

Earlier this week, an interview with the director hinted he was fed up with the arduous filming process, suggesting Mad Max movies are physically and mentally grueling.

“I was in NY and it was so noisy and the journalist was asking me questions on a red carpet at the National Board of Review”, Miller said. A couple of horror-ish films did make the cut, though, and we have those details here.

Half of the eight are still being shown in theaters and three are listed as being available – or soon-to-be available – as rentals (Bridge of Spies, The Martian and Mad Max Fury Road).

Youth and ethnicity could have something to do with it: the Academy’s 6,200 voting members include 1,223 new inductees from the past five years, with last year being “the most diverse class we added to our ranks”, an Oscar spokeswoman told me Thursday.

Miller spoke to The Wrap shortly after hearing about Mad Max: Fury Road’s impressive number of Oscar nominations.

His longtime producing partner Doug Mitchell, who joined the Kennedy Miller production house more than 30 years ago, shared the best picture nomination.

At the same time, securing Best Picture and Best Director nominations today probably didn’t hurt Miller’s ambition to return to Mad Max’s insane apocalypse.

“I thought, “Gee, someone thought we did a good job”, Miller said in his understated style. These two fan favourites are also nominated for Oscars – DiCaprio for Best Actor and Hardy for Best Supporting Actor.
