Leonardo DiCaprio’s silent, frozen ‘Revenant’ puts Oscar in sight
He said: “Leo gave me a call and Sean Penn had bailed and he was like, ‘When can we get you out here?’ No, I’m joking, but he did give me a call and we spoke and he said there’s good money and the script is awesome”.

The movie has received 12 Academy Award nominations with DiCaprio up for Best Actor, Alejandro G Inarritu in the running for Best Director and Hardy up for Best Supporting Actor and the movie will compete for Best Picture among others.
Speaking at the European premiere of “The Revenant” in London on Thursday night (13.01.16), Hardy – who plays adventurer John Fitzgerald who betrays Leonardo DiCaprio’s frontiersman Hugh Glass – said: “The nomination is for everybody that was in the cold, everyone who was in the wet”.
“I feel very proud and happy for my colleagues”.
The actor was first nominated for an Academy Award 22-years ago, for his role in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”.
DiCaprio paid tribute to the British actor, who will also be at the premiere, during his Golden Globes acceptance speech on Sunday.
“When I saw the film I just thought that it exceeded even what we set out to do”.
“But I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to do a movie like this for the rest of my career”. But many expected “Straight Outta Compton” to be nominated for best picture, and numerous handicappers had Idris Elba for “Beasts of No Nation” and Benicio Del Toro for “Sicario” as likely for best supporting actor. His last nomination came in 2014 for “The Wolf of Wall Street”, only to be trumped by Matthew McConaughey’s performance in “Dallas Buyers Club”.
He told Nick Grimshaw on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show: “The one reassuring thing about all this award season stuff is that you have absolutely no control over the outcome”. It was absolutely tough, there were no lighthearted moments, we weren’t jumping around playing practical jokes with each other off camera.
