Sanders proposes tax hike to pay for universal health care

The top question, according to Google Trends, was whether Clinton would be prosecuted.

“If a police officer breaks the law, like any public official, that person must be held accountable”, he proposed. “We are going to go forward”, Sanders said, his voice rising in anger.

An angry Clinton campaign quickly accused Sanders of breaking his pledge not to air negative ads against her. Former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley is polling at 2 percent.

O’Malley defended his record as mayor of Baltimore, which has come under scrutiny in the wake of the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody previous year.

A 2003 report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics said, “About 1 in 3 black males, 1 in 6 Hispanic males, and 1 in 17 white males are expected to go to prison during their lifetime, if current incarceration rates remain unchanged”.

Clinton suggested the plan offered by Sanders would essentially tear up Obamacare, but Sanders said he only seeks to improve the landmark healthcare law.

As Hillary Clinton fends off a rising challenge from Bernie Sanders, his wife’s campaign aides are grappling with how best to deploy what she has described as her “not-so-secret weapon”.

Clinton told Tapper that she was glad that Sanders had “flip-flopped” on the issue, but Sanders told the same show that “I resent very much the Clinton camp saying I am in the NRA lobby”.

Clinton, in her response, rattled off a litany of positions where she thought Sanders was wrong on guns, such as votes against the Brady Bill.

Clinton said she was glad Sanders had reversed his position on the liability of gun manufacturers – done the day before the debate. He says he would support legislation that would target manufacturers specifically.

She also did little to distance herself from the president, even as Republicans have argued a Clinton presidency would be the same as Obama’s third term.

The former secretary of state didn’t back down on Sunday, however.

“Well, it’ll start at the kitchen table, we’ll see how it goes from there”, she quipped.

Moderator Lester Holt noted that Sanders has newly called for raising taxes on the middle class. He says his campaign is about “thinking big”.

Her campaign noted Sanders’ plan was released a little more than two hours before the debate. “That is one of the greatest accomplishments of President Obama, of the Democratic Party and of our country”.

He praised the president, who remains extremely popular among the Democratic base, and managed to tweak Clinton in the same note. “What we should be doing is working together”.

The GOP field, O’Malley said, has been defined by “anger”.

The fourth Democratic debate, which is also the first one of 2016 and the last one before voters finally weigh in, is shaping up to be the most heated and consequential face off yet.

“If you had a universal health care plan people wouldn’t have to pay premiums”.

Sanders contends that his plan would also reduce overall health care costs.

When the conversation turned to foreign policy, Clinton said she was “proud” of the nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers implemented this weekend.

In her opening remarks on Sunday night, Clinton said Americans need a president “who can do all aspects of the job”.
