Obama heralds Iran nuclear deal, release of prisoners

He says their support gave Jason’s family the strength to keep fighting for his release.

Earlier on Sunday, the three Americans landed in Geneva aboard a Swiss air force plane.

He was convicted in closed proceedings a year ago after being charged with espionage and related allegations. Already it is thought that Asian governments from China to Japan, South Korea and India, are lining up deals to move in swiftly. Iran is looking to buy up to 400 new planes to replace its aging commercial fleet – some of which has been grounded due to a lack of spare parts. A country where foreigners, even Americans, are welcome to come and make investments.

Secretary of State John Kerry said USA officials hashed out the prisoner exchange over 11 or 12 meetings with the Iranians.

Ali Saboonchi of Parkville, Maryland, was one of seven Iranians who were released Saturday in a negotiated exchange between the two countries. Now that global sanctions against Iran have been lifted, there are no obstacles for Iran’s full membership.

His public defenders, Lucius Outlaw and Elizabeth Oyer, say Saboonchi was born in the US and is raising a family here.

“For me, it shows there are reasonable forces who don’t want to go back to the bad old days”, he says. The fourth opted not to board the Switzerland-bound flight.

Huffman said the freed prisoners are expected to be transported to a US military hospital in Germany for medical evaluation. At the time, there was some criticism that the White House was wavering in its determination to enforce those sanctions.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was an outspoken critic of the deal, making veiled threats to attack Iran and arguing against the agreement in a speech to the U.S. Congress previous year over White House objections.

ERDBRINK: No. That was actually really a bit of a surprise for those who are supporting Mr. Rouhani and officials in his government.

That hard-line pushback also helps explain paradoxes like the fact that officials, including Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, tout the deal’s benefits on Twitter even as Iranian censors block the site and other social media services at home.

The biggest obstacle was whittling down the Iranians’ list of requests to something that was within “our principles and our standards”, Kerry said. And though Iran can now sell its oil to the world again, the gain will be less than it hoped, given current low prices.

Ban was speaking in Dubai at the opening of an event about improving the delivery of worldwide humanitarian aid.

“Yesterday marked a milestone in preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon”, he said.

Rohani told parliament on January 17 that the deal was also a “turning point” point for Iran’s economy, adding that the energy-rich country needed to be less reliant on oil revenues.

Rouhani also said the deal was a win for all negotiating parties and all factions inside Iran.

“We’re not going to waver in the defense of our security or that of our allies and partners”, Obama said.

A fifth prisoner, the American student Matthew Trevithick, was released separately.

Tehran newspapers largely welcomed the implementation of the deal. That’s the opportunity before the Iranian people.

But if, from the Western perspective, this weekend’s lifting of sanctions is a signal that Iran is on its way back in from the cold, that is not the end of this story. The $75 billion budget is about 4.2 percent higher than the previous year’s budget of $72 billion. The sanctions were delayed until Sunday, after the USA detainees left Iran.

Soon, Iran will regain access to a 100-billion dollars in frozen assets and reconnect with the global financial market.

“Officials view those activities as separate from the nuclear deal”.

While the United States, which led the negotiations, has tried to promote the deal as the beginning of a new chapter in relations with the Islamic Republic, the agreement has been greeted with suspicion and trepidation across much of the Middle East.

Rouhani said the deal has “opened new windows for engagement with the world”.
