“Do you get paid double or triple time for this?” he said, drawing laughs.

“We aren’t happy about it, I can tell you”, Collins said. “I’ve never seen more flying helmets in my life”.

New York loaded the bases in the 18th on singles by Wilmer Flores and Curtis Granderson followed by a sacrifice from Plawecki that Martinez didn’t cleanly handle. An Eric Campbell sacrifice bunt scored Granderson to extend the lead to 3-1.

Grichuk was 3 for 3 with a two-run home run off Carlos Torres that capped a four-run fifth and a three-run shot off Alex Torres in the eighth.

On a steamy day with a game-time temperature of 92 degrees – a thermometer in the photographers’ well down the first-base line read over 100 – both Cy Young Award winning starters, CC Sabathia and Felix Hernandez, were done after six impressive innings with the score tied 1-all.

BLUE JAYS 4, RAYS 0: In Toronto, Marco Estrada pitched eight shutout innings, and Chris Colabello and Jose Bautista each hit two-run homers to lead Toronto. Cuddyer has five career home runs against Lackey, his most against any pitcher.

Familia did escape a second-and-third jam later in the inning with a strikeout of left fielder Tommy Pham, one of 30 K’s between the teams. Parnell then pitched a scoreless ninth before Jenrry Mejia and Hansel Robles combined for three shutout innings. Closer Trevor Rosenthal, who did not pitch in the All-Star Game because of a sore arm, was unavailable, Matheny said.

That’s precisely what happened Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Neither starter was involved in the decision. He allowed five hits and four walks in four innings.

Jeff Roberson/AP Jonathon Niese pitches 7-2/3 scoreless innings, but the game goes a long, long way after he exits. They failed in their first 15 chances before Kevin Plawecki notched an RBI single in the 13th for a 1-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Cooney and seven relievers continually worked in and out of trouble. Keeping the bout alive for the Cardinals, second baseman Kolten Wong tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning off of Jeurys Familia.

If Sunday’s 18-inning marathon victory over the Cardinals serves as any indication, this much seems clear: These Mets can compete with anybody-assuming they pick up a bat or two before the July 31 trade deadline. They take a day off before a two-game interleague road series with the Chicago White Sox. One run can in on a sac fly, the other came in on a suicide squeeze.

Martinez, the Cardinals 8th pitcher of the game, was scheduled to start on Tuesday night.

The Mets went on to strand Plawecki, Ruben Tejada, who slapped a single on the hit-and-run, and Daniel Murphy, who was intentionally walked, when pinch hitter Johnny Monell popped up to third.
