Some of the messages also show Chapo flirting, presumably with del Castillo, calling her “beautiful…in all aspects” and writing “I love you”. On the other hand, American authorities have very rarely made a decision to prosecute journalists for having contact with controversial figures, though Penn has received plenty of criticism for his actions in interviewing Guzman.

Mexico has said it plans to extradite Guzman, head of the Sinaloa drug cartel, to the United States, where he is wanted for exporting hundreds of tonnes of cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin across the border.
