“The Revenant” took home the top three awards of the night, including Best Director, Best Drama Motion Picture and Best Actor in a Drama award for Leonardo Di Caprio. Its lead actor Gael García Bernal took the gong for his role as conductor Rodrigo De Souza.

This advantage has fared much better for the leading ladies – in the past 25 years, 88% of the GG winners for Best Actress later went on to win Oscars that same year!

Netflix totalled nine nominations at this year’s show, including two for 2015 debut Narcos, plus one each for Master of None, Bloodline, and Grace and Frankie.

Leo reportedly also said that he would not be drinking at the Globes again. Previously, he won a Golden Globe Award for “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “The Aviator”, but has not yet received an Oscar although he has been nominated four times. Jennifer Lawrence won best actress in a comedy for “Joy”, her third Golden Globe win for a David O. Russell film, who she thanked effusively in her speech.

“Carol”:The film came into the Golden Globes Sunday with more nominations than any other movie, but walked away empty-handed.

Finally, the Best Foreign Language Film was predictably awarded to Son of Saul, a Hungarian production.

In the television awards, Jon Hamm was the only repeat victor, picking up the best actor in a TV drama for his role as Don Draper in Mad Men.

Awards race dark horse “Steve Jobs” also got some love on Sunday with wins for Kate Winslet, for best supporting actress, and Aaron Sorkin, for the screenplay.

Esmail accepts the award after “Mr. Robot” won the Best TV Series, Drama at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills.
