US imposes ballistic missile sanctions on Iran after prisoner release

“In terms of the global backdrop, Iran’s reintegration could hardly come at a worse time”, an October report by the Dubai-based bank Emirates NBD said.

The three were scheduled to be transported to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, a USA military hospital, after arriving.

“Overwhelmed to greet Jason #Rezaian, his wife, Yegi, mother, Mary + Saeed #Abedini + Amir #Hekmati to #Geneva after safely departing #Iran”, the State Department’s Brett McGurk said on Twitter. At the time, Rezaian was the Post’s bureau chief in Tehran.

The fourth, Nosratollah Khosravi-Roodsari, opted to remain in Iran, officials said.

Eight Iranians jailed or facing charges in the United States for sanctions violations are to be released under an exchange deal for Americans held in Iran, according to a lawyer, court records and people familiar with the matter.

Both the Washington Post and Rezaian denied the accusations.

“That just wasn’t available to us two years ago”, the official said. “We are relieved that this 545-day nightmare for Jason and his family is finally over”. Some firms may want to wait until they see the stance of the next US president toward Iran; many will worry about “reputational risk”, or exposure to legal action from shareholders or lobby groups, if they invest there.

“Nobody has been defeated in the deal, neither inside the country nor the countries that were negotiating with us”, he said, referring to the United States, the UK, France, Russia, China and Germany.

Hekmati was arrested in Iran in 2011 accused of spying for the Central Intelligence Agency.

However, the attorney for Bahram Mechanich, one of the seven, told CNN his client was pardoned along with two others – Tooraj Faridi and Khosro Afghahi – but their release awaits the Americans’ departure from Iran. The state-run Islamic Republic News Agency named the other men as Nader Madanloo and Nima Golestaneh. Iranian officials and USA administration officials confirmed the news Saturday.

The “new ordinance” which resulted in the lifting of some sanctions took effect at midnight on Sunday.

In an indication of the scale of potential deals, the transport minister said at the weekend that Iran meant to buy 114 civil aircraft from Airbus – a deal that could be worth more than $10 billion at catalogue prices.

Kerry has said the nuclear agreement “accelerated” the prisoner exchange, but he told CNN on Monday that talks on the nuclear deal were on a “separate track” from the swap.

USA companies look set to lag rivals from other countries in restoring trade with Iran, because Washington will retain broad sanctions that predate the nuclear crisis and were imposed over other issues such as terrorism and human rights abuses. “We are grateful that Pastor Abedini, Mr. Rezaian, and Mr. Hekmati are free, and I am honored to participate in this joyous delegation”. The judge said Abedini’s activities were “threatening the national security of Iran”.

Huffman said the freed prisoners won’t be on US soil for a few days, he said. And then there was this sort of nail-biting period of limbo as we waited for them to actually get on a plane and leave Iran.

Israel has a close relationship with US Republicans and Mr Obama has a year in which to cement the deal with Iran – to make sure if he is replaced by a Republican president, the deal will stand. “Because it all became real”, the congressman told CNN.

“I’ve met with some of the families”.

“We have now cut off every single path that Iran could have used to build a bomb”, President Obama said Sunday.
