The crowd had gathered for the celebration of the 33-year anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. “Celebrate! Act! King’s Legacy of Freedom for Our World”. New Hampshire was the last state to enact a King holiday.

“Out of all the stuff that we’ve been through in this city, it’s about togetherness”, Forsett said.

“We are hoping this becomes our Chicago Selma moment, that not only lifts up the struggles of the past, but more importantly points toward hope for the future”, said Rami Nashashibi with the Innter-City Muslim Action Network.

The state NAACP said there is still more work to do to honor King and the theme of this year’s rally is “education equity”, with speakers calling for SC to spend more money to help students in poorer, more rural school districts, which frequently have a majority of black students.
