Acts of service mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Michigan
“If we can get to know the kids before something happens that’s great”, DeRuwe said. Many were holding hands, others carried signs, while some were heard singing along the route to remember a man who symbolizes civil rights and liberties for our country.

In South Carolina, civil rights leaders planned a march to their state capitol as in past years when their rally highlighted calls to remove the Confederate flag from Statehouse grounds.
“You had to respect your mother, your father, and even other people mother and father, but we’ve gone away from that now”, Rountree said.
“Do not serve because it is MLK Day, try to serve every day because that is what it is all about”, said Radio One promotions assistant Ariana Rogers.
In the nation’s capital, President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama planned to take part in a community service program in King’s honor.
And William Daugherty and his fraternity are here to shed light on King’s legacy.
Organized by the county’s NAACP branch, officials wanted Monday’s events to be more visible and inclusive. “So we use Martin Luther King as a role model, and each of us can be a leader”, said Binghamton resident Diane Ramnarine-Sing.
“People come together in celebration not just of him, but of where we have come from where he was”, said Sheila Charles, Ray Charles’ daughter.
“I’d rather have one but to have two different locations so more people can come out and support the parade day I think it’s helpful”, said Jonathan McFarland, a Grande Parade participant.
King was assassinated nearly 50 years ago. Day is not a day off. Instead, it is a day that gives them a chance to give back to their communities.

Stay on topic – This helps keep the thread focused on the discussion at hand. “We are together seeing people as people and uniting, and that is what this day has been about – and it has been a blast all day”.
