“It lets us know that we should continue to celebrate civil rights, and remember the sacrifices that people did before us and the sacrifices that people still make today”, said Dr. Malika Carter Director of Multicultural Services at UND.

People braved the cold temperatures to march in remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr.in downtown Raleigh on Monday morning.
Music filled the south steps of the Texas Capitol, as youth with the Vision of Hope AME Church talked about what Dr. King means to them. And following the Supreme Court decision, he said, this year’s presidential election will be the first in 50 years without key federal protections for voters’ rights.
“Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s mission to reconcile a divided nation lives on and depends on us all”, said Lt. Governor Polito. Or do we have a long way to go?
He also recounted where he was the day Dr. King was assassinated.
King said people have been distracted from real-life issues with things like reality shows and programs like “Scandal” and “Empire”.
“When I think about the state of affairs in America, it seems to me since Dr. King’s assassination, we’ve kind of failed to follow the blueprint”, King said.
Many marched, walked and waved their way down East Broad Street to honor Martin Luther King. “And with this, I ask you to carry that seed and share it with the world”. “(We) pay homage to the man who paved the way”.
University staff gave students signs with historical facts to help them understand the importance of Dr. King’s march on Washington. The event included preparing a garden bed and packing bags with books, the White House said.
They sang “We Shall Overcome” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing” as they made their way to Dumas Auditorium. In telling his story, Dickinson described the ill treatment the student received from other students and school officials because of the color of his skin.

Howard, whose young daughter was on a float with her cheerleading squad from Scott Elementary School, said her daughter understands the significance behind the holiday.
