Golden Globes featured several Oscar hopefuls among winners

Rising star Brie Larson won best actress in a drama for her role in “Room”. The film was a part of the 2015 edition of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) line-up.

Other top winners included Sylvester Stallone, who received a standing ovation as best supporting actor for the film “Creed”. He won the Best Actor in a Drama award for his work on “The Revenant”.

Some were shocked when Mozart in the Jungle, the incredible Amazon Prime dramedy took home not one, but two Golden Globe Awards, beating out shows like Orange is the New Black and Veep and actors like Patrick Stewart and Jeffrey Tambor!

The 2016 Golden Globe Awards took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., and aired on NBC Jan. 10.

There were some surprises though, such as the resounding success of The Revenant, which won best film, best director and best actor which went to Leonardo DicCaprio. Leonardo DiCaprio won a well-justified trophy for “The Revenant”, while the film’s Alejandro G. Iñárritu earned Best Director in addition to Best Drama. This category will remain a head-scratcher until the Oscar ceremony, that is, until the SAG Awards clear things up a bit more. If Lawrence wins the Oscar for Best Actress, it would be quite unfortunate.

They give Globes to whom they want to and don’t seemed to feel too burdened to predict the bigger race, but some recent statistics tell us that a few categories might be in the bag for last night’s winners. “The Martian” took home the other Best Movie award of the night, as well as a Best Actor in a Comedy award for the star of the film, Matt Damon. “I wasn’t judging him, but now I find myself in the awkward position of having to introduce him”, Gervais said about the now infamous 2010 joke. “The Son of Saul” also won the Grand Prix at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Ricky Gervais returned as host for the fourth time and was delightfully indifferent about the whole ceremony. The Globes have instead grown into one of the most popular award show broadcasts of the year, thanks to increasingly credible nominees, its trademark relaxed atmosphere and its unique position as a major awards show that honors both film and television. Expect their publicity and momentum to kick into full swing, especially once we hear them during Thursday’s Oscar nominations.

As a movie buff, every year I look forward to the Golden Globe awards as it marks the start of the awards season and has been considered a precursor to the Academy Awards. The Foreign Press continued to abjectly refuse to pick actual comedies to win the comedy awards, with “The Martian” taking home Best Comedy and relatively unknown dramedy “Mozart in the Jungle” winning Best TV Comedy.
