Here’s the real story behind Martin Luther King Jr.’s greatest moment

A large group of people marched through downtown Spokane Monday for the 30th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Hundreds showed up on their day off to be on their feet partaking in the peaceful gathering. “It’s not a holiday just to take the day off but it’s an honor”, said Parkin.

Deshotel said while Texas has come a long way in honoring the concepts Dr. King fought and died for, the Lone Star State still has a long way to go.

People filled the church’s pews and listened to speakers reflect on King’s legacy, and how he’s impacted their lives.

Event-goers all agreed one way to cut down on the violence in our neighborhoods is to keep the community coming together the way they did for this multicultural celebration. “I like looking at x-rays and figuring out the mystery behind it”, she said.

“We’ll do inspirational quotes, books, authors, role models for the students to give them a more warm and welcoming environment”, said City Year Executive Director Jason Holton. New Hampshire was the last state to enact a King holiday.

He said a lot of the issues he spoke out against are still prevalent in American society today, with low voter turnouts, lack of voting access and the disproportionate influence of money on politics.

Pastor Boyd says as a leader in Christ, Dr. King has inspired his faith. In a nod to that legacy, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro was set to speak at Monday’s service.

The Hartford Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. observed the 31st annual King Scholarship Breakfast at the Connecticut Convention Center.

Thousands of people braved the cold and lined King Street to celebrate the life of Dr. King.
