Mayor Biskupski honors Martin Luther King Jr. with day of service

It may have been a day off from classes for students at CMU, but many still took the time to give back to the to the Mount Pleasant community and honor Martin Luther King Jr.
For most of the day USC Aiken Saturday Academy members have been celebrating Dr. Kings legacy the best way they know how, through service. They had singing, dancing, and more as they celebrated the civil rights leader. Accordingly, NBA stars have taken to Twitter to reflect on the man, this celebratory holiday of his life and work, and of course the importance to remember Dr. King’s dream. The Rev. R.A. Callies Sr., a San Antonio pastor and teacher, began leading small processions honoring King’s legacy shortly after the slaying, according to the MLK Jr. In Atlanta, an overflow crowd listened as to the USA housing secretary talk about the 50th anniversary of King’s visit to Chicago to launch a campaign for fair housing.
Dozens of people, like Lee, came out to Monday’s bridge unveiling and a special city hall meeting to remember the civil rights leader. It was a relatively short march of a mile or so, but what it represented was the strides made toward equality since Dr. King’s assassination.
“We have commercialized so many holidays – Presidents Day, Veterans Day, Memorial Day – this really should be a holiday of giving, of doing service for someone else”, said veteran and Crossroads Hospice volunteer Kevin Bradley.
They say the cold temperatures don’t compare to the hurdles civil rights advocates pushed through.
The keynote speaker was Marion’s first elected black city commissioner, Angelo Hightower.

The NAACP then marched five blocks to the Statehouse with candidates Martin O’Malley and Bernie Sanders up front.
