Starbucks and streaming service Spotify are expanding their relationship today with the launch of a new digital music experience for Starbucks customers which will allow them to identify songs being played in stores, then download and save those they like to a playlist on Spotify’s app.
The fruits of the new Starbucks-Spotify partnership will be available to Starbucks’ mobile app users on both Android and iOS. This can affect which songs are played at SBUX locations depending on customers’ preferences.
This morning, Starbucks announced a pretty major partnership with Spotify, one that will get more users into Spotify, but will also satisfy music curiosity needs of its regular customers.
You can check out the new Spotify integrations in the updated Starbucks iTunes app where available now.
“Music has played a pivotal role in our stores for over 40 years and we have been at the forefront of how to integrate it into a retail environment”, Starbucks chairman and CEO Howard Schultz said in the company’s press release statement Tuesday, as part of the announcement. If you like what you’re hearing, you’ll be able to immediately find out what is playing with a quick glance at your phone.
That latter option will allow Spotify users to continue to access the songs, as well as the Starbucks-curated playlists, even after they’ve left the store. These playlists will be available to any Spotify user, not just those paying for a premium subscription. From here you can browse the Spotify playlist for the store and click on any track to open the Spotify app and add it to your playlists, play it in your headphones, view the artist, or anything that you can normally do with a track on Spotify.

Starbucks will also serve up the most popular music from over 20 years of in-store playlists, and customers will be able to influence future playlists by actively choosing to “Love” a song that they hear.
