Ex-Boyfriend Kills Two SUNY Geneseo Students, Then Himself

It’s looking as if 24-year-old Matthew Hutchinson, a former hockey star on the North Shore who went on to play for the Chilliwack Chiefs, was the victim of a double murder-suicide in New York State this weekend, in which a fellow State University of New York student was also killed.

“We believe Mr. Kingston was distraught over the breakup, which led to the events yesterday”, Szczesniak added. Kingston called his father at 6:21 a.m., telling him he had “brought harm” to Annese and that he was “considering harming himself”, Szczesniak said.

Annese and Hutchinson were students at SUNY Geneseo and were both members of the school’s athletics program.

Motivation for the attack has not yet been provided by the police, although they did note Kingston was upset with the situation and had made suicidal comments to friends before the murder.

He was last seen around 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. Saturday night. They have provided useful information in reducing the concern of a very anxious community.

“I was pretty close to him”, Chanler said.

Police said sometime between 5:30 a.m. and approximately 6:20 a.m., Kingston showed up to 18 Wadsworth St., armed with a knife he’d bought at a local store.

Police believe Hutchinson and Annese may have been asleep when killed.

Annese and Hutchinson were students at SUNY Geneseo.

“Kelsey will always be one of my all-time favorite players not because of anything she will have her name next to in the record book, but because of the type of person she was”, Hemer said.

Kingston used a large knife he had recently purchased, the officer said.

On Monday, a Canadian flag flew alongside the American flag at the Geneseo Fire Department, and black bunting was draped on the building’s facade, the Democrat and Chronicle reported.

“Many of our students were looking forward to coming back and starting a new semester, and then to be hit with this, so given this, it’s quite sobering, and shocking”, said Robert Bonfiglio, vice president for student and campus life at SUNY Geneseo.

Annesse wore the number 32 jersey because it is the same number her father wore when he played for Geneseo, according to a bio on the college’s website. The college postponed the men’s and women’s basketball games scheduled for Tuesday and was making counselors available to students and faculty.

Annese was a senior from Webster near Rochesterwho was a well-known member of the women’s basketball team.

“She was an extremely hard-working, dedicated and a sweet girl that could put a smile on anyone’s face”, Houppert said.

A remembrance ceremony is planned for Wednesday evening.

“We think our students will be comforted by keeping as much stability in their life as possible, even during a hard period of mourning”, said Battles.
