Louis Van Gaal Claims Premier League Title Still a Possibility

Wayne Rooney kept up his hot streak by scoring a 78th-minute victor as Manchester United beat Liverpool 1-0 in the Premier League in a poor-quality game between English football’s two most successful clubs on Sunday.

Manchester United players were involved in a shouting match at half-time of Sunday’s win over Liverpool, midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has said.

“We have to continue, which is not so easy, but we can do it”.

“We want to win every trophy we can, whether it is FA Cup, Capital One Cup or Europa League”.

Rooney wrote on his Instagram page: “Massive 3 points for us today”.

“When the gap is like this, seven points, you can overcome that”. So that’s what I’m thinking.

“I think [being left out] can refresh you and spur you on a bit more to prove to everyone just how good you are”. We started 2016 very good with a lot of wins – this game will give a big boost to the players and the fans and the environment of Manchester United.

“But we didn’t give so much away in the second half, so I am a happy coach”.

After the match, the manager expressed his disappointment in not capitalizing on opportunities.

Louis van Gaal’s men also looked to have reverted to their goal-shy ways of recent weeks, showing little sign of the renewed attacking vigour on show during Tuesday’s 3-3 draw at Newcastle United.

“The goal was to defend and we didn’t do it”, said Klopp.

“I didn’t see too many chances for Manchester United, and we didn’t take ours”, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said to BBC Sport.

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho, who plays alongside Schneiderlin for France, said they could hear United players yelling at each other through the dressing-room wall.

As Daniel Storey noted in 16 Conclusions, the Brazilian – once again chosen ahead of £32.5m striker Christian Benteke – created five chances in a 1-0 defeat which featured 19 shots but only four on target for Liverpool.

“Maybe we need to be more concentrated, I don’t know, but we need to keep going onto the next game and play well”.

United got their winning goal following a corner and Liverpool lead the Premier League with eight goals conceded from set pieces.

Rooney appears back to something close to his best form after a disappointing first half of the season.

United are now seven points off leaders Arsenal and next have two home games against Southampton and Stoke City – games the fans will hope the side take six points from.
