Head coach Doug Pederson is now interviewing candidates for defensive coordinator and Jim Schwartz might be his man. According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Philadelphia Eagles are interviewing the former Detroit Lions head coach Monday evening. According to NFL.com at the time of his hiring, “Schwartz will provide a coach’s perspective with some of the decisions made by the officiating office”. He flew into Philadelphia on Monday to meet with the Eagles and attended Pederson’s press conference Tuesday afternoon. The Titans’ defenses were a mix of good and bad, depending upon the year, in Schwartz’ first six seasons, but were among the league’s best from 2007-08. Schwartz spent eight seasons in Tennessee working under current Rams head coach Jeff Fisher. Schwartz took a year off in 2015 after a housecleaning in Buffalo, but it’s looking like he’s back in the saddle with the Eagles. They also finished fourth-overall in scoring and yards. He was not retained after Doug Marrone bailed on the Bills and Rex Ryan took over and didn’t work in the National Football League last season.

The Eagles actually ran a 4-3 “wide nine” three years ago before switching to a 3-4, and numerous players former coach Chip Kelly brought in were meant to fill roles for the 3-4 style. Schwartz and Reich would give Pederson experienced play callers on both sides of the ball. Part of the problem for Detroit was the lack of offensive improvement under Schwartz, whose coaching background is exclusively on defense.
