The World Comes to a Standstill as Twitter Goes Down

Some Twitter users had to do without early Tuesday after sporadic outages knocked the social media site offline in the US and Europe.

Users worldwide were prevented from logging into the site on web and mobile browsers for several hours.

Twitter initially confirmed the outage with a tweet from its @support account.

“Something is technically wrong”, another notice on the Twitter website said. “But as quick as we complain, we quickly forget and go back to our daily habits”, he said. The vast majority of the outages seemed to be concentrated in Europe, but reports of trouble reaching Twitter came from across the globe.

However, the service experienced further problems at around 11.40am, with users faced with the same earlier error message.

It was unclear how widespread the outages were, but by mid-morning on the East Coast, desktop and mobile versions of Twitter appeared to be working.

However, the company was mocked for updating its users by sending a tweet, when a lot of them were unable to see it. The problem seems to be affecting Twitter.com and the mobile apps, though TweetDeck hasn’t worked with full functionality either.

Rick Devens, a local USA radio host, posted on Facebook: “We may never get back some of the clever thoughts I had during this tragic outage”. Twitter’s official service page is yet to recognise the incident, but does mention a “service issue” the previous morning, which lasted for 10 minutes.
