The health unit conducts an adult mosquito surveillance program using carbon dioxide bated light traps at 18 different locations throughout Hastings and Prince Edward Counties. In severe cases, West Nile Virus can cause an inflammation of the brain known as encephalitis.

“We want people to know that while mosquitoes are active, the chance for West Nile Virus infection is there, nearly anywhere in California, and people should try to protect themselves from mosquito bites”, Dr. Cutler added.

In previous years, WNV has been reported from all parts of the state. In a small number of cases, infection can result in encephalitis or meningitis, which can lead to paralysis, coma and possibly death. All Mississippians are potentially at risk – not just the areas where cases are reported. About 1 out of 5 of those infected will develop fever along with symptoms such as headache, body aches, and occasionally vomiting, diarrhea, or rash.

These collections were taken from Silver Spring and Dickinson townships in residential areas, suggesting the mosquito reproduction is likely occurring in water habitat on residential property, according to a news release from the county.
