THE box-office power of Star Wars: The Force Awakens wore off this week as Universal Pictures’s Ride Along 2 unseated the latest chapter in the space saga from the top spot it has held for four weeks.
Monday estimates showed the comedy sequel, re-teaming Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, will come in ahead of Fox’s “The Revenant”, which has been over-performing during the weekend with an estimated $39 million at 3,559 locations.
“Ride Along 2” topped the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend with an estimated $41.5 million over four days, according to studio estimates Monday. It has earned $851 million stateside and $1.86 billion globally. It has grossed $87.7 million to date.
Michael Bay’s politically charged drama war thriller “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi” will finish fourth in its debut over the long weekend with an estimated $17 million for Paramount.

Rounding up the Top 10 were sixth placer “Norm Of The North” with $8.7 million, “The Forest” at seventh place with $6.5 million, “The Big Short” placing eighth with $6.3 million, “Sisters” at ninth place with $5 million and “The Hateful Eight” at tenth with $4.2 million, according to Gossip Cop. New Regency financed the film, which saw its budget balloon from $90 million to $135 million due to production delays. The film received three Oscar nominations, including one for lead actress Soairse Ronan and best picture.
