Patriots win as time management again haunts Reid and Chiefs

The Patriots beat the Chiefs 27-20 on Saturday. After Wilson failed to get out of bounds, the Chiefs didn’t get a play off until there was just 2:33 left on the clock when they ran for a one-yard loss. Instead, the Chiefs made a decision to take their time getting plays off and let the clock tick off way too many seconds that turned into minutes.

The Chiefs could not get another possession – although they came close when the Patriots tried passing for a first down, and Tom Brady’s pass deflected off two players and into the hands of wide receiver Julian Edelman for a first down.

“We wanted to maintain our timeouts the best we could”, Reid said on Sunday, one day after the loss. “It would have put us in a ideal situation to do that”.

“When you’re down there at the 5, you want to score”, Reid said.

The KC Chiefs played a pretty good game against one of the best teams in the National Football League and as a dynasty, one of the best of all time. “Now you’re sitting there at the two-minute warning with a touchdown and an opportunity to kick an onside kick”.

The Chiefs did not have two plays called in the huddle in the event West didn’t score with 2:29 left or when Avant was stopped short of the goal line, requiring them to re-huddle. “We wanted to make sure we got our best personnel on the field for that play, and we didn’t get that done”.

“You have anywhere from a minute on, after an onside kick, you have time to tie the game”.

However, Kansas City’s poor clock management cost the team more than a minute at a point in the game when every second was crucial.

“I could tell the Philly media was up in the booth”, Reid said with a smile.

“We went hurry-up offense”, he said. Reid’s mismanagement of the clock has been a glaring problem throughout his career.

“The foundation of this team-the toughness, the resiliency there-they know there are things they can overcome when their backs are against the wall”, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said.

“We potentially would’ve had three timeouts and an opportunity to drive the field, which I thought was huge”, Reid said. So I thought that part was handled right. “It would’ve been nice to get a score before the two-minute warning”.
