Directed by Tom McCarthy, the film follows The Boston Globe’s “Spotlight” team, the oldest newspaper investigative unit in the U.S., as it looks into widespread child sex abuse by Catholic priests.
“Spotlight” actress Rachel McAdams on behalf of herself and co-stars Liev Schreiber, Mark Ruffalo, John Slattery, Michael Keaton, Brian d’Arcy James and Billy Crudup accepted the best ensemble prize during the show. “I was very happy and extremely grateful when I was invited to shed light and bring light to a story, which I think all of us thought was very moving but also very important to tell, about two very pioneering women who went on a big journey together”. Margo Martindale won for guest actress in a drama for “The Good Wife”.
Instead the awards went to “Spotlight” (best picture), Brie Larson of “Room” (best actress); Alicia Vikander of “The Danish Girl” (supporting actress) and George Miller of “Mad Max: Fury Road” (director). Coming in second with the most awards was the brand new series “Mr. Robot”, which walked away with Best Actor in a Drama Series and Best Drama Series.
Rocky star Sylvester Stallone continued his winning streak with a best supporting actor accolade.
Tremblay won for his role in “Room”, where he played the son of a kidnapping victim who has been held captive for years.
It was the only award that N.W.A biopic “Straight Outta Compton” was up for at the show, but the film was on everyone’s minds on the blue carpet and in the early moments of the evening after it received only one Academy Award nomination for screenwriting just days earlier. I am truly amazed, I did not expect this, I swear to you.
Ex Machina, Inside Out and Amy bagged the Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie, Best Animated Feature and Best Documentary Feature respectively.
Like the January 10 Golden Globes, the Critics’ Choice, hosted by film and television critics, handed out prizes for accomplishments on the big and small screen. He described it as “the best day of my life”. I first want to say thank you to all the critics who voted for me.
For an added touch of sweetness, Jacob then thanked his parents and revealed he’d be putting the gong on the shelf by his Millennium Falcon.
