With Confederate flag gone, Martin Luther King Day rally shifts focus

The Martin Luther King Community Center hosted the 4th annual Martin Luther King basketball tournament and tribute to honor Dr.King’s legacy.

Demby recognizes firsthand what MLK has done for our country as his family moved to the land of the free from West Africa. “When the kids come around and do things with us it makes them feel so much better”.

Muskegon Public School students were encouraged to make a day off from school a “day on” in their neighborhoods, spreading a message of peace, tolerance, and acceptance.

“This day is devoted to improving education and I hope for the sake of the children of SC, progress is possible”, said Clinton.

The parade featured a marching band amongst the floats, all to celebrate Dr. King’s life and legacy.

Event-goers all agreed one way to cut down on the violence in our neighborhoods is to keep the community coming together the way they did for this multicultural celebration. “So that’s a powerful statement to those students”, said Holton.

Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.in South Carolina Monday, all three Democratic candidates for president used his name to garner support.

“From year to year, each textbook told the same one-dimensional story”, Campbell High School junior Roberto Luis Landrau said.

Hundreds of volunteers of all ages were lined up ready to go on Monday at the Food Bank of Northern Nevada offering their time to help others. He also recounted where he was the day Dr. King was assassinated. “I’ve only missed one since then”.

The Columbia chapter of the Martin Luther King Memorial Association organized the event. “I want people to be involved with what King was about and his vision 365 days a year”.

“It means that anybody, regardless of race, regardless of your background that you can be successful and that you can be somebody”, Gilmartin said.
