Force strong with Star Wars in China
“Fast & Furious 7”, China’s top-earning foreign movie, earned $182 million during its opening weekend in May a year ago. DiCaprio is up for Best Actor at Sunday night’s Golden Globes for his work in the film! For a film plagued with production problems, which saw the budget bloom to $135 million, 20th Century Fox has to be pleased with its performance.

The movie hit an worldwide milestone when it premiered in Germany, becoming the 4th highest-grossing movie in Germany, with only the films “Avatar”, “Titanic”, and “The Jungle Book” earning higher in a German venue. The scare came in the form of the survivalist tale The Revenant starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
Chinese cinemas dedicated half their screens to “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” when it debuted on Saturday, according to the Walt Disney Company China. The film also became the fifth biggest opening of a January film, beating Zero Dark Thirty’s $24.44 million and Lone Survivor’s $37.85 million. The revenge drama about a fur trapper whose quest for vengeance finds him braving roaring rapids, dodging hostile Native American tribes, and disembowelling a dead horse, became an unlikely box office victor. That’s just a few million short of Inarritu’s last Oscar-winning film Birdman, which made $42.3 million during its entire run. Perhaps if one person wins this week’s $1.3B Powerball jackpot in the US, they’ll spend all their money on Star Wars tickets?
In Canada and the US, the movie is now the biggest grossing ever and the first to surpass the $800 million mark with a current total of $812 million. Critics received the film warmly, with 81 percent giving positive reviews, according to aggregator Rottentomatoes.com.
As for the weekend, the film took in $41.63M domestically and set a record in China this weekend with $56.3M.
Aimed at younger females and Latino moviegoers, the PG-13 supernatural scary flick landed in fourth place at the domestic box office, behind the Paramount Pictures comedy “Daddy’s Home”.
