Copperas Cove church holds 18th annual MLK Day celebration

Rather than using Monday, January 18th as a day off, Vincent High School junior Solomon Demby was in school celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“It was great, it was great-exactly as we anticipated”, said Jimmie Smith, a member of the “Freedom Skaters” who participated in the parade.

An awesome event that will continue for years to come.

Urban Ministries of Wake County provides food to more than 8,000 needy families and 9,500 children annually.

Folks gathered at the Frank Johnson Recreation Center Monday morning, and three other spots, where they marched to downtown Macon’s City Hall.

“MLK was a big contribution to society and me just being here as somebody who can help contribute to this case and live on the legacy that is why I’m doing this today”, said Ian Rwebemeera student at UND.

“Some of the violence that goes on here, it’s very sad that us blacks are killing each other the way they are”, she said.

“Because if you’re not careful, we’re about to allow a reality show host to bully himself into becoming president of the United States of America”, she said.

“Dr. King stood in the gap for so many of us”.

Taking a note, and the words from Dr. King, Scott says he believes “the time is always right to do what is right”.

“People come together in celebration not just of him, but of where we have come from where he was”, said Sheila Charles, Ray Charles’ daughter.
