Roanoke churches pray for peace, unity on MLK Day

The MLK program also featured speeches, a piano selection and the reading of Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream Speech”.

All proceeds benefited the Robert W. Johnson Community Center capital improvement and scholarship funds. Marcelli said she hopes they understand the significance of the day. “When the kids come around and do things with us it makes them feel so much better”.

The Democratic candidates for President typically attend King Day at the Dome during election years and this year was no exception.

In 1966, Houck, a 19-year-old civil rights volunteer, admired the King family.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., has been gone almost 50 years, but his spirit is alive as many across the country remember him.

“We like to do a service to help the people who are marching for the MLK March so that’s the least we can do”, said Perlean Bland of the San Antonio Black Nurses Association.

“When I think about the state of affairs in America, it seems to me since Dr. King’s assassination, we’ve kind of failed to follow the blueprint”, King said.

“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. didn’t have a fellowship at one church; he had fellowship at many churches”.

“I’m very proud to be Mayor of a city that focuses on diversity, focuses on helping each other”, Mayor John Clark said. I can eat with other people.

In a nation where we’re constantly reminded how far we’ve come and how far we still need to go; Charles Spratt pushes the importance of keeping the youth involved.

“We are the class of 1967, Thompkins High School and we have been participating for years”, said Mars Gray.
