It was not known how many passengers were on the bus, or what led up to the crash.
The ensuing crash investigation is expected to involve Greyhound as well as the California Highway Patrol’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT), which Brazil said was summoned to the area from San Luis Obispo. One passenger told Tran that he was sleeping and woke up when the bus jolted and people started to scream.
A San Francisco-bound Greyhound bus from Los Angeles flipped over on Highway 101 in San Jose this morning at around 6:40 a.m., coming to rest on a concrete median strip. Investigators are trying to learn the cause of the accident. Gilroy was the last stop before the wreck Tuesday morning.
The cause of the crash was under investigation.
Final passenger update: 9 injured/transported, 2 deceased, 9 waiting transport to San Jose Greyhound station. The passenger claimed the bus driver fell asleep. A San Jose Fire Department spokesperson said in addition to the two people who died, five people have significant injuries, and 13 had less severe injuries and were being treated on the scene. A auto in the southbound lane hit some debris and suffered damage, but the driver was uninjured, Miceli said. Several lanes of the highway in both directions had been closed by the accident.
The driver, one of the people taken to the hospital, will be asked to submit a blood sample to test for alcohol and drugs.
KRON 4’s Will Tran spoke with passengers about the terrifying moments when the bus overturned in the video above.
The California Highway Patrol said 39 passengers and the driver were aboard the bus when it flipped onto the center divider.

A manager responsible for highway maintenance on that stretch of road, John Andrusko of Emcon Services, said it had been sanded twice before the accident.
