US and South Korea in strategic talks after North’s nuclear test

Last, the Korean media outlet Newsis claims that according to the Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights & Democracy, after North Korea’s bomb test China added 3,000 more troops at the border in case the situation deteriorates.

“(The test) created tension and protecting the safety of our people became our priority”.

Also, in the past China has frequently urged that the nuclear problem on the Korean Peninsula be solved through “peaceful conversation and negotiation”.

 The North also initiated propaganda broadcasts on Monday from loudspeakers situated on its border with the South, in a tit-for-tat response to the South’s decision on Friday to resume such broadcasts.

The South Korean loudspeaker campaign marks its fourth day on Monday, with North Korea showing no signs of military action over the broadcasts. It responded with artillery fire the last time South Korea used the speakers in August.

That reaches numerous huge force of North Korean soldiers stationed near the border, as well as residents in border towns such as Kaesong, where the Koreas jointly operate an industrial park that has been a valuable cash source for the impoverished North. The North has previously shelled a South Korean island near their maritime border and sunk a South Korean naval ship.

Even North Korea needs hard currency to pursue its nuclear ambitions.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his South Korean counterpart Yun Byung Se by phone Friday that efforts should be made to pave the way for negotiations to end North Korea’s nuclear arms program, according to a text message from South Korea’s foreign ministry Saturday. It was flanked by two fighter planes, a US F-16 and a South Korean F-15, before returning to Guam, the USA military said in a statement.

The discussions come one day after the US flew a B-52 bomber on a low-level flight over South Korea in what was viewed as a show of support for its ally after North Korea’s supposed bomb test of a hydrogen bomb on January 5.

Despite its repeated threats, the North is claiming that it is building bombs – and missiles to carry them as far as the US mainland – exclusively as a self-defense measure, saying the downfalls of Iraq’s Saddam Hussein and Libya’s Moammar Gadhafi were due to dropping their pursuit of nuclear weapons.

U.S. aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, now in Yokosuka, Japan, is widely expected to be deployed on the peninsula during the U.S.-South Korea joint annual war games scheduled to kick off in February.

The only US broadcaster now operating in the tightly closed country, CNN has been given exclusive access to North Korean sites and prisoners.

The last time the USA sent a nuclear-capable bomber over the area, the crisis steadily fizzled.
