Powerball hits $1.5 billion, largest-ever lottery jackpot for one victor

Spain’s Christmas lottery, nicknamed “El Gordo”, or “the fat one”, distributed $2.4 billion in prizes last month, with the top prize of $811.2 million in that drawing split among 1,950 tickets.

The cash value is $930 million.

Powerball is played in 44 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Powerball jackpot swelled to $1.5 billion on Tuesday morning, a day ahead of the next drawing. You win the $1.5 billion jackpot if you match the first five numbers in any order and match the Powerball number.

The chance of winning the grand prize is one in more than 292 million. By making it harder to win a jackpot, the tougher odds made the ever-larger prizes inevitable.

The next drawing is Wednesday at 9:59 p.m. Central time. The Pennsylvania Lottery has sold 17 jackpot-winning Powerball tickets and two jackpot-winning Mega Millions tickets. The pool is now sitting at $1.4 billion, and will continue to rise as ticket sales boom.

Sweeney says out of those taxes, about 42 percent of every dollar goes to the state in the form of unrestricted local aid.
