Twitter outages show other options needed

Twitter says it has resolved the outages caused by a glitch in a software update that affected users around the world. The issue was related to an internal code change.

The issue still left people wondering about what their worlds would be like without Twitter.

Both Twitter’s web and mobile services began suffering outages concentrated in northern Europe around 0820 GMT, with smartphone users receiving the warning: “Tweets aren’t loading right now”. The image above was once the familiar screen icon users would see when the site was inaccessible in its early days.

Several disruptions have been experienced by Twitter since last few months now, but the most recent one was reported on 15th of January.

Almost half of the users (46 percent) complained about problems accessing Twitter via its Web site.

“Any downtime for a technology brand is negative, and as quick as we complain we quickly forget and go back to our daily habits”, said social media expert Warren Knight.

According to DownDetector, the problem began around 3:30 a.m. ET, and was largely contained to the United Kingdom and Europe, though reports tip US disturbances, as well. Japan also reported outages but users in other Asian countries said Twitter service was operating normally. About 1 p.m., the company said it had reversed the change, which fixed the issue.

Twitter shares have tumbled 20 per cent on the NY stock exchange since the start of the year.

Many news organizations across the globe reported on the outage.

Twitter has suffered regular outages since its launch in 2006.

The company wasn’t saying much about the outage as of late Tuesday morning.
