Investigators said they will review on-board surveillance video in an effort to determine the cause of the crash.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene while another eight were taken to hospital including the driver who suffered minor injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Antonio Olivera said his mother was a stay-at-home mom who loved to take care of her family and had immigrated to California from the Philippines in September.

The driver began his shift at 11:30 p.m.as he drove the bus from Los Angeles Monday with stops planned in San Jose, San Francisco and Oakland.

Another passenger said he and his girlfriend was stuck in the back of the bus and had to climb through the whole overturned bus to escape out of the front. Among the passengers transported to local hospitals, three are in stable condition, three are being treated for minor injuries and three have been treated and released.

The accident is under investigation.

Accordingly, the crash occurred at around 6:40 A.M. and it lead to four lanes on 101 being shut down.

After the bus rolled, a driver travelling south hit some of the debris, damaging the vehicle but leaving the motorist uninjured, Miceli said. The National Transportation Safety Board will also be sending a Highway Investigation Team to help in the case. The accident is under investigation, and authorities say the driver will be asked to submit a blood sample to test for alcohol and drugs.

Miceli said the bus – carrying 18 to 20 passengers – struck yellow impact barrels in a gore point and overturned on its right side.

The crash caused traffic to be backed up for miles, in what had already been a slow morning commute due to rain, according to FOX News.

Hill said the bus was traveling northbound, but it was facing southbound on the south side of the road.

The California Highway Patrol said 39 passengers and the driver were aboard the bus when it flipped onto the center divider.
