Academy President Addresses Lack of Oscar Diversity

‘To sit here looking at receiving that many nominations for this film, it not only feels good but it also feels like people have a yearning to see a different type of film’.

The hashtag #OscarsSoWhite was quickly revived on Twitter. All 20 nominees for best actor and actress, and in the supporting acting categories, were white.

The glaring absence of black actors or directors among this year’s Oscar nominees has triggered an outpouring of criticism, setting social media abuzz as the list was unveiled on Thursday. While the Academy might have an excuse, some find it ridiculous that movies like Sicario, Beasts of No Nation, Concussion, Tangerine, and Straight Outta Compton could have easily been included in the list.

“I can now look at movies I did 10 years ago with real judgement”.

Hardy’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” also exercised some gasoline-fueled muscle. All three boast budgets above $100 million.

“The Revenant’s” Best Picture competition includes “The Martian”, “Bridge Of Spies”, “Brooklyn”, “The Big Short”, “Room”, “Spotlight” and “Mad Max: Fury Road”. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is nominated for Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and that classic John Williams score.

“No Best Picture nod for Carol?”.

The Academy revealed that Alejandro González Iñárritu’s film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the 19th century explorer Hugh Glass, will compete in 12 categories including best film, best director, best actor, and best cinematography. “You are never going to know what is going to appear on the sheet of paper until you see it – we have got to speed it up”.

“Champagne and Mezcal will run tonight!” Some believed he wasn’t only a sure Academy nominee but likely to win another Oscar.

Previous Oscar winners Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Lawrence returned to the best actress race, which has no obvious front-runners.

This year, she was recognized for playing the Miracle Mop inventor in “Joy”. Inarritu, who won the best director Oscar previous year for “The Birdman”, said it meant a lot to be appreciated for the movie.

Sylvester Stallone, 39 years after his acting nomination for “Rocky”, was nominated again – for “Creed”, in which he plays the same character, Rocky Balboa.

He said: “I’m not p****d”. The other five were: Tom McCarthy’s investigative journalistic procedural “Spotlight”, Steven Spielberg’s Cold War thriller “Bridge of Spies“, Adam McKay’s Michael Lewis adaptation “The Big Short”, the mother-son captive drama “Room” and the ’50s Irish immigrant tale “Brooklyn”.
