She noted, on average, the Red Cross must collect 14,000 blood donations every day for patients at about 2,600 hospital and transfusion centers across the country.
REX Blood Services in Raleigh said it urgently needs donors of all blood types, especially O positive and O negative.
Many generous Americans nationwide have been donating blood for many years.

To add to the urgency, Blood has a shelf life of only 42 days. While in treatment, she was often in need of a boost for her white blood cell count.
The Estes Park Medical Center will host the Red Cross Blood Drive 7:30 a.m.to 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 25 in the lower level conference rooms. Blood is the liquid that circulates throughout the entire body carrying nutrients to every cell and at the same time carrying away waste products. In adults, the spine, ribs, and pelvis are the primary bones that make blood. “So that means we are using all the tools we have in our arsenal to recruit donors and recruit people to come in and give blood”, Scannell said.
Locally, a blood donation opportunity is scheduled to take place from 8 a.m.to 1 p.m. January 22 at Summit Road Elementary, 8591 Summit Road in neighboring Etna Township.
