Robert Redford addresses diversity in film at Sundance

Overall, Sundance received 4,081 submissions for feature films, of which 98 were approved for world premiere slots. He said he’s most looking forward to the audience reaction to the 195 films picked for this year’s line up.

Like always, Redford was in top shape during the conversation, which took place at Park City’s own Egyptian Theatre.

Redford, however, stressed that he values diversity in film.

“I’ve been a part of [the mainstream] and very happily a part of that”, he said.

He’s most excited for the audience’s reaction.. “People aren’t aware of the pressures”. His new film Operation Avalanche depicts an undercover mission during the Cold War in which young Central Intelligence Agency agents pose as documentary filmmakers to uncover a potential Russian mole inside NASA.

“I want to make it clear that I’m not against the mainstream”, said Redford, himself an Oscar victor.

“Diversity comes out of the word independence”, said Redford. “People here liked it because it related to skiing and traumatic brain injuries in skiers”, Snow said.

But these days, wherever prominent filmmakers are, questions about diversity follow. It’s a word I’ve operated from personally most of my life: the value of the word independent. “If you’re independent-minded, you’re going to do things differently than the common form”. If I go to Toronto’s festival, well, I have a pretty good idea that I need to see The Martian.

A second panel will be chaired by YouTube CMO Danielle Tiedt and will feature the platform’s virtual reality and 360-degree videos, reports Mashable.

“It’s really about giving options, much like we adults have, to choose different types of films and stories”, Hubley said. “I don’t think about it. There’s nothing more important than the work when you’re doing it. So once that work is done, I back off. It’s just not something that occupies my thinking”. “The technology may be driving us to smaller and smaller things, but you can’t replace the value of gathering in community space in the dark on a big screen and being transported if you are”. “I’m not into the Oscars… I’m not into that”. The movie is set to receive its premiere at the festival and is a drama that I can not wait to see. That’s for Donald Trump to say! “What I mean is I’m not focused on that part”, he added. To me it’s about the work. “Therefore you’re going to have more diverse products”. “We want to be a world-class destination for film production”.

Sundance was born to be weird.. “Anyway, my guys on the other side at LAX will tell me who is leaving to come here”.

“The people who were making movies just because they could, those people went away”, says McInnis.

“To have Daniel Radcliffe play a dead body through a whole movie and make it interesting is just so original”. Maybe people like to ski – that would be fun. And this year, the big opening night documentary is about Norman Lear, the legendary TV writer and producer.

The Sundance Film Festival, the world’s largest independent film festival, attracts thousands of cinema lovers and industry insiders to Park City, Utah for its annual showcase of the best independent moviemaking. Traveling to 12 countries on 6 continents, the film acknowledges that it may be too late to stop some of the worst consequences and asks, “What is it that climate change can’t destroy?” There are a few theatrical films on the subject and several documentaries. And still others will run right into the eye of the storm, camera in hand, hoping for the money shot.
