United States knew of actors’ connections to Guzman before meeting, officials say

The actor also shrugged off a suggestion that he was “taking hits” for agreeing to submit his article to Guzman prior to publication by Rolling Stone.

“I’ll tell you, I am more excited about you than the (movie) script”, Guzman wrote to Del Castillo, to whom he had identified in his chat or text account as “ermoza”, a misspelling of the Spanish word for “beautiful”.

Del Castillo, a Mexican-American actress, brokered the notorious meeting between Guzman and USA actor Sean Penn at an undisclosed jungle clearing in October, three months before the fugitive’s capture.

He also instructed one of his representatives to buy her a pink mobile phone, according to the texts.

Kate del Castillo has finally broken her silence on the Sean Penn-El Chapo saga, saying, “many have decided to make up items that they think will make good stories and aren’t truthful”.

At one point, Guzman – who is reportedly married to former beauty queen Emma Coronel and has had children with her and several other women – writes, “My mother wants to meet you”.

In the initial piece, it was revealed that Penn, 55, and El Chapo, 57, first met in person on October 2, in a rural town located in Durango.

The anonymous official said Guzman went to Los Mochis in part because he was “very interested” in meeting 43-year-old del Castillo again, although a second meeting did not take place.

“It’s a lie, absurd speculation from Mr Penn”, Juan Pablo Badillo, one of a team of lawyers for the drug lord, told Reuters in an interview Wednesday. DVDs of her TV show were found in his hideout.

The lawyer for the kingpin said that based on his long time working with El Chapo, he was sure he would not make such a self-damning statement.

In the meantime, Guzman, who faces drug-trafficking and organized crime charges in Mexico, was being held at the same prison he escaped from in July.

The U.S. government sources could not confirm whether or not authorities will subpoena Penn. “So I don’t know, I guess we have bigger problems in this country, but I guess it is a little incredible that he was able to get an interview with a guy that everybody else was looking for, right?” I wonder if Penn has done any research on the conditions of Mexican Prisons and whether he would enjoy playing the role of a real inmate in one for say ten years?

Unless Penn aided and abetted Guzman in some way, the Oscar-winning actor would not have a duty to disclose to authorities that he was talking to a fugitive, legal experts said.

“They see he’s getting rich, he’s getting powerful, he’s got all the ladies and it sends the wrong message”, Franco said.

In the Eastern District of NY, for example, a 49-page grand jury indictment accuses Guzman of running a cartel that imported “multi-ton quantities of heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana into the United States” and of employing hit men who carried out murders, kidnapping, tortures and other acts of violence.
