We’ve been hearing a lot this week about Winter Storm Jonas and the… dusting of snow it might bring to Western Massachusetts. “Farther south, significant icing is likely for portions of Kentucky and North Carolina”.
The storm is set to hit the mid-Atlantic on Friday afternoon and continue into Saturday, making for slick roads and potential power outages.
Asked to put the potential of the storm into historical context, National Weather Services Director Louis Uccellini said Thursday he would defer until the storm has come and gone.
All on-campus dorms and apartments were not supposed to open until Sunday, but will now open Friday at 9 a.m.to accommodate students traveling from the New York City and metropolitan area, where Winter Storm Jonas is expected to hit Friday.
A major winter storm system is heading for the eastern U.S. Winter storm watches and blizzard warnings are already in effect in multiple states.
The weather service warns that travel will be limited if not impossible in the areas where blizzard conditions are forecast. The animation was created by NASA/NOAA’s GOES Project at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
