“It was cold and it was a struggle, but this is nothing compared to what they(civil rights pioneers) faced before so we need to stand that we wouldn’t be where we are without them”, he reflected.
Derrick Thaxton, with the Decatur Human Resource Council, says King’s dream is just as important today than the day it was delivered.
Those who knew Dr. King can’t help but travel down memory lane. “We are not restricted that we have certain areas that we have to go into and now, it’s a blessing to be able to do that and fellowship with one another”, she said.
“I think it important to have them more often because one of the things that we lack just as a nation is education in terms of the contribution of African American people in this country”, Edouard said.
So we asked those who attended what they think needs to happen.
U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro told the church audience about King’s trip to Chicago. Participants carried signs, US and Texas flags and linked arms in a show of support for communities working together.
The march started at the Union Missionary Baptist Church and ended at the MLK Neighborhood Center.
“We could have manned this with our own people but the point of Martin Luther King day is harmony over hate so well get people to come together”.
Because of high tensions, when Civil Rights leaders including King came to speak at Tougaloo, they weren’t allowed to stay in the hotels, so her parents welcomed him into their home.
Communities around the CSRA used the day to commemorate King’s legacy, and continue his mission. “Celebrate! Act! King’s Legacy of Freedom for Our World”. CT student Angel Wells also performed a powerful reading of Dr. King’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech.
