Clinton faces challenge in Iowa caucus reminiscent of 2008

Clinton has long struggled to connect with liberal activists, who have gained influence as the party has shifted left during President Barack Obama’s two terms in office. As for Sanders, among the public overall more are favorable than are unfavorable – something that can not be said of any of the other candidates, Democrat or Republican.

Three polls released this week out of New Hampshire also show Sanders leading Clinton. “As bad as things are in Syria, and they are, more Iranian troops are only going to make it worse”.

The former Secretary of State’s criticism of Sanders comes little over a week from the Iowa caucuses, where the two Democrats are locked in a tight race. The sample included 266 who were likely to participate in the Republican presidential caucus and 280 who were likely to participate in the Democratic presidential caucus. If New Hampshire is any indication (where Sanders is ahead by nearly 30 points) Clinton should be very anxious about who will be standing on the Philadelphia podium July.

Clinton and her team believe they can still win the February 1 caucuses in Iowa, arguing that her broader support will help her pick up more delegates, due to the proportional nature of their allocation in the state. “It would be such a huge step”, she said. Trump and Cruz are almost tied in polls of Iowa voters.

“I think a lot of people are thrilled that he’s catching on and what he’s saying is so contagious”, said Burton. Among Democratic primary voters, while 70% have a favorable opinion of Clinton, even more – 78% – have a favorable view of Sanders.
