The collection of nearly 70 sheets contains copies of Vemula’s suicide note, the Facebook comments by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) student leader that triggered the controversy, Union minister Bandar Dattatreya’s letter to human resource ministry as well as the ministry’s missives to the university, Vemula’s SC caste certificate, reports from the police, hospital and university regarding the alleged attack on the ABVP leader, suspension orders of the scholars and the court affidavit.
Students raise slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a convocation ceremony at the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University in Lucknow yesterday.
Vemula’s suicide has sparked major protests in the university.
“Reasons (behind the suicide) and politics (on the issue) may have their own place but the fact remains that a mother has lost her son”, he said.
“A mother has lost his son, there can not be a bigger grief”, PM Modi said.
“After taking into account the extraordinary situation prevailing in the university and after discussing the issue in detail, the Council has resolved to terminate the punishment imposed on the students concerned with immediate effect”, a release from UoH said.
Ten professors belonging to SC/ST community have resigned from their administrative posts in the University of Hyderabad, in response to the “fabricated statements” by Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani over the Dalit scholar’s suicide.
However, the students vowed to continue their agitation till the Centre agrees to meet their other demands including dismissal of the Vice Chancellor. “We appeal to the Prime Minister to remove Smriti Irani and Dattatreya from his Cabinet”.
The 28-year-old victim from Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district was found hanging at the hostel room of one of his friends around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.
