Exploding Kittens Android version release next, then BlackBerry

To bring the game to mobile, Lee and Small partnered with the Seattle-based digital product studio Substantial, as well as Inman, in order to translate the table game into a local, peer-to-peer party game you play on your phone. You’ll also be able to buy the Party Pack expansion deck, or download it for free if you move quickly.

Exploding Kittens, the breakout card game hit from The Oatmeal, was released a year ago to much fanfare.

The release of the iOS version of The Oatmeal artist’s “Exploding Kittens” card game is followed soon by an Android app. The iOS version of this game for iPhone and iPad has gone to the top of the iOS App Store – in just under a day.

Exploding Kittens is now number one on the App Store.

The card game set two huge crowdfunding records in 2015, netting $8.7 million in donations in less than one month on Kickstarter. As the website describes it, Exploding Kittens is simply a kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette. The rest of the deck is filled out with cards that let players dodge explosions or put competing players in danger. Even though many people are not familiar with Substantial, they have worked with big names like Amazon, Starbucks, Lexus, Google and Universal.

To the game’s designers, though, the concept of everyone sitting around the same area and screaming at each other while they blow themselves up with little digital cats is the reason why they limited the game’s multiplayer. At the end of their turn, they must draw a card, and then the next player does the same.

If you’re not yet convinced of the game’s potential, you can check out how to play Exploding Kittens in the video below.

We’ve seen card games similar to this before, but Exploding Kittens is joyously bonkers and elevated by the hilarious card sketches and ridiculous sound effects.

To enable this functionality, the game uses a combination of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to allow players to communicate with others around them, instead of relying on the Internet or Game Center.

The app also arrives with in-app purchases of avatars for those who want to further individualize their experience and it’s likely to add more cards over time.
