Robert Redford ‘not into’ pitting Sundance vs. the Academy on diversity

There’s also The Lure, a musical about a pair of pop-star mermaids who are hungry for love and also human flesh.

Schnack’s movie, a powerfully arranged collection of both everyday footage and 911 calls, is one of several films across both documentary and narrative categories to tackle mass shootings, defined by federal statute as the murder by gunfire of at least three people.

He heads to Sundance this year with the much more ambitious conspiracy tale Operation Avalanche, a ’60s-set thriller that suggests the moon landing was faked by the Central Intelligence Agency.

It’s hard to say which Sundance films will spark bidding wars like last year’s “Dope” and “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”, but heading into the fest, “Swiss Army Man” is one of the more-buzzed-about movies.

Dads will be dads no matter where they are and producer, director and writer Judd Apatow was no exception at Thursday’s Sundance premiere of the movie “Other People”.

It’s a challenging environment right now for indie film, Redford said, as many new distractions compete for audience attention and money. “I think these adventurous audiences are really going to be excited by the energy, creativity and fresh perspectives in these films”.

That said, Just Another Version will feature prominently in the national conversation when it airs, especially in the social media, given Lear’s enduring public reputation not just as an artist and impresario, but also as a champion of liberal values and folk hero for the left. They include Bacon & God’s Wrath, directed by Sol Friedman; The Chickening, directed by Nick DenBoer and Davy Force; and It’s Not You, directed by Don McKellar.

Complete Unknown: Working along similarly themed identity-questioning films as Sunday and previous year at Marienbad, Joshua Marston’s film concerns a dinner party held by a married couple, in which one of the guests brings a date the husband is positive he met before, only she seems to have no idea who he is or what he’s talking about. And just make it weird, and different? You get caught up in the relationship between Dano and Radcliffe. I still love meeting people on the bus, chatting about what films they’ve seen and loved (or hated). “What I mean is that I’m not focused on that part of it. To me it’s about the work”.

Another wild combo is the singing mermaids of The Lure, a film by Poland’s Agnieszka Smoczynska that’s competing in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition.

Love & Friendship: Whit Stillman is a divisive figure among cinephiles – some find him engagingly clever, others annoyingly cloying – but his new film, based on the Jane Austin novella, features a sparkling cast (Kate Beckinsale, Chloe Sevigny and Stephen Fry), and a series of petticoat dalliances and British misunderstandings that sounds like our properly hot cup of tea. “Then you’re going to have more diverse products”. Morris From America promises to be another character study, this time observing an African-American teen (Markees Christmas) and his father (Craig Robinson) as they cope with their new lives in an unwelcoming German town.

Sleight – Promising young talent Jacob Latimore (Black Nativity, Ride Along) returns to the big screen in a film about a young man who tragically loses his mother, assumes responsibility for his younger sister and is, for lack of a better term, just outchea tryna function…with street magic.

The team from Funny Or Die joins Samsung to debut the world premiere of the first-ever virtual reality comedy short, “Interrogation” featuring comedians Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel. NPR’s Mandalit del Barco is there with a preview of what’s to come over the next 10 ten days. “That’s part of this story, as well”.

“Diversity comes out of the word independence, that’s the principle word we’ve operated from”.

That’s the kind of surprise Johnson enjoys. It’s a word that I’ve operated from personally for most of my life…
