EPL: Wayne Rooney sets scoring record to sink Liverpool
“United had only one shot on target at Liverpool, but it was the winning goal for Wayne Rooney, who is looking sharp again”.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is adamant that his side are still in the title race following their 1-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday, Mirror reports.
He said the win at Liverpool was “very important” because both Arsenal and second-placed Leicester had been held to draws and added: “The gap is seven points”.
Describing Van Gaal as a ‘top-class’manager, Rodgers said that the Dutchman was highly experienced, insisting that he had won big games for some of the biggest clubs in the world. It’s three points we needed to continue this start of this year. Maybe that one-hand [save from a Can shot], but I think he has to stop that ball.
“We have a lot of matches to go. He is playing very good but you cannot say he was a fantastic, marvellous goalkeeper today”, Van Gaal continued.
He was a peripheral figure against Liverpool until the hosts switched off at a corner, allowing Marouane Fellaini to head against the bar from Juan Mata’s cross, and when the ball dropped in the six-yard box, the United number 10 reacted quickest to lash home the victor. Then we lost Rooney…goal.
The goal, his 176th for United, also means Rooney overtakes former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry for the most goals for a single club in Premier League history, although it was clear he was unaware of the milestone in the post-match interviews. We can overcome that, so that’s what I’m thinking about.
I think everyone knows the importance of this game regardless of positions; we could be top or second from bottom.
In a game that was a pale shadow of previous meetings between these two Premier League superpowers, Liverpool had the better chances and United keeper David de Gea kept his side in it with fine saves from Adam Lallana and Emre Can.
“It was an important win for us”.
The 30-year-old has hit a purple patch of late with four goals in his last three games. “It could have been a different game altogether but we paid for the chances we missed and conceding from a set piece was disappointing too”.

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho said: “United were lucky and they know it. We could hear them shouting in the dressing room at half-time”.
