Murray advances, Ivanovic loses amid medical distraction

Following her second-round victory against Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova at the ongoing Australian Open 2016, Ivanovic addressed the media about her plans for the sport’s mega event to be held in Brazil this year, as she revealed that besides the singles event, the women’s doubles event is also on her radar.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) – An urgent medical situation had an impact on players on adjoining courts at the Australian Open when Nigel Sears, who is Ana Ivanovic’s coach and Andy Murray’s father-in-law, was rushed to a hospital while both third-round matches were in progress.

Hewitt showed characteristic grit and determination, but succumbed to a 6-2 6-4 6-4 second-round defeat on Rod Laver Arena.

Murray said he felt sorry for innocent players being accused of match-fixing but believes more accountability is the only way to root out corruption.

The second key to an Ivanovic win over Keys is her first serve.

This time, the 2008 finalist didn’t come back to win.

In the locker room prior to the match, Groth had betrayed his nerves at playing for the first time on Rod Laver Arena within earshot of Murray and the Scot took advantage of the big man’s unease in a one-sided first set.

Murray’s match wasn’t stopped, but word filtered through as he finished. If I play well, I have a good chance obviously. “I’ll just have to see what happens”. I could have served better, for sure. He’s nearly the opposite to Groth really.

But Ivanovic got another crucial break in the eighth game, and a backhand into the net from the Latvian ensured she lived to fight another day.

Two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka too continued the incredible start to her 2016 title campaign, notching a swift win over Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic to advance to the third round.

Earlier, the session began with a distinguishable lack of star power, with the draw deprived of Rafael Nadal, Simona Halep and Venus Williams following their surprise first round departures.

Stan Wawrinka won his 400th tour-level match with a 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory over Lukas Rosol in the third round at the Australian Open.

Hewitt, who played his first Australian Open in 1997, never achieved his ambition of winning the national championship.

The no. 15 seed Keys is trying to repeat her Australian Open performance from past year where she reached the semi-finals. No. 21 Ekaterina Makarova scored a minor upset when she dominated No. 9 Karolina Pliskova, 6-3, 6-2.

Milos Raonic dedicated his third-round victory, a 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 win over Viktor Troicki to victims of a shooting in a remote community in Saskatchewan, Canada which left four people dead and at least two injured.

“It was tricky. I didn’t feel I was in a great rhythm and wasn’t hitting the ball cleanly at the start”.

His voice sounding emotional at times, Raonic added: “Unfortunately in Saskatchewan in a very small community there was a shooting at a high school, so I want to take a moment and give thoughts to that community”.
