Manchester United are inching towards signing Sergio Romero as Louis van Gaal seeks a replacement for Victor Valdés, the Spanish goalkeeper who is for sale.

Van Persie made just four appearances over the final three months of the season after the injury against Swansea City in February and told The Times that he could see where things were going when he was left on the bench as Man United lost 1-0 to Chelsea on April 18.

All great managers need to make hard decisions if they are to be successful, as Sir Alex Ferguson often showcased during his time in charge of United.

Van Gaal has captain Wayne Rooney at his disposal, youngster James Wilson and also Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez looking to prove himself after being sent out on loan to Real Madrid last season. “He has been a bit ruthless with a few of his decisions lately and that is what good managers do”, Robson told reporters.

The Red Devils have been linked to some stellar names across Europe for the most part this summer, but it seems that Rooney will be handed the responsibility of playing as the main forward in Van Gaal’s 4-3-3 system.

It’s been a hugely exciting time for United fans this Summer as the likes of Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin, Matteo Darmian and a certain German legend have all joined the club with plenty of transfer window to spare. “He has outstanding quality, he can be a big influence at Manchester United this year”, the 58-year-old ex-skipper added.

Italian giants AS Roma are also said to be interested in the 28-year-old, though it is understood to Serie A club could not match United’s wage offer.

The teenager is likely to get a run-out in United’s second tour match against the San Jose Earthquakes, which takes place at the Avaya Stadium on Tuesday night.
