Manager Louis van Gaal acknowledged the Manchester United fans were right to boo after their team drew yet another home blank in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton.

The Southampton defeat also saw United fail to score in the first half for an 11th-consecutive home games, with the half-time and full-time whistles met with a furious reaction from the Old Trafford faithful.

Former Manchester United chief executive David Gill has called for calm amid more speculation over the future of manager Louis van Gaal in what he admits is a season of “under-achievement”.

“You can not say that they [fans] are not right”.

“Clearly we all hoped the results would have been better and everyone is disappointed with that”, he said. For me, what we did in the past was great-you’ve got to have the players to do that.

Van Gaal’s side sit fifth in the Premier League table, five points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur just a week on from the 64-year-old’s claim that United could still challenge for the Premier League title.

Van Gaal, who has had pressure mounting on him in recent months due to substandard showings on the pitch, has admitted that his side looked like they lacked confidence.

“The lucky one has won but the fans want to see a winning Manchester United and we could not provide that for them”.

The 34-year-old is moving to the Belgian club on loan until the end of the season and will become a free agent in the summer.

“What a start for Austin, delivering a victor seven minutes and 43 seconds into his debut”. I have seen the match also.

“That is the risk you take, it was a poor game and we didn’t create so much and neither did our opponents”.

“Darmian was injured and then it was gone”. We did not win the league again until 2007. “Now we have big competition in our squad and I have to make hard decisions”.
