We couldn’t break Southampton down today, they played a very solid five and we found it very hard but we need to learn from this.

He said before today’s return to Manchester: “Old Trafford is not really intimidating, no”.

Betfair are offering new customers enhanced odds of 10/1 on Manchester United to beat Southampton on Saturday.

However, Southampton should be in confident mood themselves after easing to a 3-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion last time out while Dustin Tadic netted the victor in this fixture last season, so Ronald Koeman will be hoping to get a repeat result against his old foe van Gaal this weekend.

Koeman mentioned United’s set-piece frailties to Austin before the striker entered the fray and headed home James Ward-Prowse’s right-wing delivery.

Van Gaal’s side are seven points adrift of current Premier League leaders Arsenal, who face defending champions Chelsea in Sunday’s late kick-off.

The 26-year-old continued to score regularly in the Championship this season and was rewarded with a move to Southampton last week for 4 million pounds ($5.71 million).

Add to that the fact that they haven’t scored a first half goal at home for a whopping 11 games on the spin, and things start to look pretty bleak.

Although it appears that Liverpool have put their interest in Southampton man Shane Long off to one side as they try to broker a deal for highly rated Shakhtar Donetsk attacker Alex Teixeira, the Reds apparently aren’t the only one interested in the Irish striker.

Manchester United host Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

The performances in those games remain questionable, but the points accrued have at least lifted them back to within striking distance of the top four.

The skipper has scored in all four of their matches since the turn of the year, and another this weekend would make it five on the bounce for the first time since March 2010.

They have lost their last four Premier League away matches. No one thought we would score three goals though!
