Winslet on DiCaprio Oscar nod: ‘It’s going to be Leo’s year’

The survivalist drama about the 19th century fur trapper Hugh Glass is leading in the nominations with 12 nods including the best director for Alejandro G Inarritu.

Todd Haynes’ Carol and F. Gary Gray’s Straight Outta Compton were not nominated for this category.

Meanwhile the biggest movie in film history, Stars Wars: The Force Awakens managed to nab 5 nominations but failed to receive one for Best Picture. Five others are Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight, Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies, Adam McKay’s The Big Short, Lenny Abrahamson’s Room and John Crowley’s Brooklyn.

Sylvester Stallone (“Creed”), Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies”), Mark Ruffalo (“Spotlight”), Christian Bale (“The Big Short”) and Tom Hardy (“The Revenant”) will be vying for the Actor in a Supporting Role trophy.

Eight out of a possible ten films were nominated for best picture.

Miller first won an Oscar for “Happy Feet”, and though his 2016 contender has already received a wave of praise and good reviews, he said it was an honor to be put up against other incredible films. They will compete with singles including Lady Gaga’s track Til It Happens To You, from The Hunting Ground, and The Weeknd’s Earned It, from Fifty Shades Of Grey.

No actors of color were nominated in the best acting or supporting acting categories this year, despite a backlash last year over a lack of diversity in the 2015 awards.

And in the best documentary feature category, Amy Winehouse documentary Amy secures a nomination for London-born filmmaker Asif Kapadia and James Gay-Rees.

But it was “The Revenant“, director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s grueling and expansive historical epic, that garnered the most nominations. Similarly, no women cracked the Best Director race – but, sadly, that comes as no surprise.ABC will air the Oscars live on February 28, with Chris Rock hosting.
